EVENING PRAYER I

HYMN

When heavens praise your elevation,
May the earth, too, worship you with a song,
O Blessed Virgin, Mother of Jesus,
Immaculate.

How joyous is the whole Polish nation
That rightly calls you Queen,
And with proofs of its love
It pays homage to you.

When tears flow in suffering,
It offers prayers to you with trust,
And you reverse the anger and enemy’s arrows
With your own power.

O Leading Star amidst the storms of sea,
O fortified Tower when enemies attack,
Haste to help your devoted
Sons of the Polish land.

Glory be to the Triune God,
Who crowned you, O Lady,
And in His goodness he left our land
Under your reign. Amen.

HYMN

O Lady, Queen of our nation,
You have been the mainstay and strength
Of those who submitted their hope in you,
Mother of God.

You lead us as a shining cloud,
With your brightness showing us the path
Of faith, unity, peace and harmony,
Mother of God.

In our triumphs and everyday toil
With your help we wish to be faithful
To the Good News of God’s Kingdom,
Mother of God.

Protect us, O Mother, from our weakness,
Be with your people, when an ordeal comes,
Make us all the temple of Christ,
Mother of God.

To the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
To one God let forever be
Glory and thanksgiving for our Queen
Mother of God. Amen.

FIRST READING

From the Book of Revelation 12:1-9; 13-17
A great sign in the sky

A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth. Then another sign appeared in the sky; it was a huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on its heads were seven diadems .Its tail swept away a third of the stars in the sky and hurled them down to the earth.

Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she gave birth. She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod. Her child was caught up to God and his throne. The woman herself fled into the desert where she had a place prepared by God, that there she might be taken care of for twelve hundred and sixty days.

Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it.

When the dragon saw that it had been thrown down to the earth, it pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle, so that she could fly to her place in the desert, where, far from the serpent, she was taken care of for a year, two years, and a half-year. The serpent, however, spewed a torrent of water out of his mouth after the woman to sweep her away with the current. But the earth helped the woman and opened its mouth and swallowed the flood that the dragon spewed out of its mouth.

Then the dragon became angry with the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring, those who keep God’s commandments and bear witness to Jesus.

RESPONSORY Revelation 12:1

A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet,
And on her head a crown of twelve stars, alleluia.

Her Son reigns for ever.
And on her head a crown of twelve stars, alleluia.

King John Casimir’s oath taken on 1 April 1656
I choose you today for our Patroness and Queen

Great Mother of God-Man, Most Blessed Virgin, I, John Casimir, by the grace of your Son, King of kings and my Lord, and by your mercy, King, falling at your most holy feet, choose you for my Patroness and Queen of my countries. I entrust to your admirable care and protection my own self with my Kingdom of Poland and Duchies of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, Smolensk, Chernigov and the armies of both nations along with all my people. I humbly beg your help and pity in this deplorable condition of my Kingdom, full of defeat, against the enemies of the Roman Church.

And for I am in awe of your countless strange blessings, burning with my nation with a new and eager desire to be entrusted to your service, I swear to you and your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, with my own and my senators’ and people’s names that I shall spread your glory and devotion over all lands.

I take an oath and promise that if through your mighty intercession and your Son’s great mercy I win a victory over enemies, especially over Swedes, I shall turn to the Holy See to permit us to give thanks to you and your Son by commemorating this day annually forever and I shall endeavour with all my Kingdom’s bishops to fulfil all that with my people I hereby swear.

For I do clearly see with the great grief in my heart that due to the groans of the peasants, Your Son, the just Judge, has sent the plagues of pestilence, war and other misfortune to the Kingdom in this past seven years, I further swear and promise that when peace begins along with all the estates I shall use all means to liberate the people of my Kingdom from unjust burden and oppression.

For you, our most merciful Queen and Lady, have inspired me, the senators and estates of my Kingdom to turn to this oath, grant me too that from your Son I may obtain the grace of fulfilling them. [1]
