The apostolic message by Pope John XXIII
The mainstay of faith

The Warsaw Cathedral dedicated to John the Baptist can be rightfully called a mainstay of faith. The temple was founded in the 13th century as a parish church. Our predecessor Boniface IX, at Prince Janusz Mazowiecki’s request, made it collegiate church. When Warszawa replaced Kraków as the capital of Poland, the temple became the church of Polish kings connected to their court. The kings generously granted it numerous gifts including the painting by the Italian painter Giacomo Palma the Less and an effigy of crucified Christ made by the artists of Nuremberg that have been venerated by believers.

In the church King John III Sobieski publicly offered thanksgiving to God for the victory in Vienna. In 1797 this famous shrine was granted the title of cathedral. Inside its walls Achilles Ratti, the later apostolic nuncio and pope, was anointed as bishop. This house of God, famous for its believers’ devotion, historical relics and works of art, fell victim to the cruellest war and was completely destroyed. However, after the days of calamity, it was rebuilt and restored to the initial Gothic style.

Our beloved son, Stefan Wyszyński, the cardinal and presbyter of the Holy Roman Church and Archbishop of Warszawa, mindful of the glorious history of this temple that is a monument of the devotion and faithfulness of the Polish nation, wished to honour it with the title. He requested that we grant it the title and rights of minor basilica. Complying willingly with the request, after having heard the opinion of the Congregation of Rites, with our full Apostolic Power with this document we hereby elevate the Cathedral Church of the Archdiocese of Warszawa to the status of minor basilica and grant it all the rights and privileges of such a temple.[1]

RESPONSORY cf Revelation 21:21; Tobit 13:18; 13

Your streets, Jerusalem, shall be of pure gold and sing hymns of gladness,
And all your houses shall cry out, “Alleluia!”

Your bright light will shine and all parts of the earth will fall prostrate,
And all your houses shall cry out, “Alleluia!”
