August 26, Our Lady of Częstochowa (Najświętszej Maryi Panny Częstochowskiej)

August 26
OUR LADY of CZĘSTOCHOWA
Solemnity

Ladislaus, a prince of Opole, built a Pauline monastery on Jasna Góra and entrusted them with an image of Virgin Mary, venerated in his castle. Soon the image became famous for miracles. Its eminence increased after the defence of Jasna Góra against Swedes. In 1717 the image was ceremoniously crowned and Jasna Góra became the main centre of Marian cult in Poland.

It offers prayers to you with trust,
And you reverse the anger and enemy’s arrows
With your own power.

O Leading Star amidst the storms of sea,

Haste to help your devoted
Sons of the Polish land.

OFFICE OF READINGS

HYMN

Blessed Virgin, Lady of Jasna Góra,
Who are worshipped here
Let the hymn of praise
Be sung to you on this festive day.

Mother of Jesus, your benevolent image
Shines with golden riches and jewels
That was laid here as the sign of gratitude
By your faithful people.

Your dignified face is hurt
With a godless thrust of treacherous sword,
But the piety of kings and subjects
Restores your glory.

You are called Mother by Poles,
Remembering their great victory,
It was your prayers that crushed
The enemy’s army.

Welcome, O Virgin, thousandfold saint
Hasten to protect people who trust you;
May everyone feel your care
At the hour of their death.

May there be glory, thanksgiving,
And praise to the Trinity,
For the holy image of the Mother of God,
Queen of Poland. Amen.

Antiphons, Psalms and Responsory from Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

FIRST READING

From Letter to the Galatians 3:22-4:7
By Faith We Are Sons of God and Heirs

Brothers! The Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, though he is master of all, but is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world. But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

RESPONSORY cf. Galatians 4:4-5; Ephesians 2:4; Romans 8:3

When the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
To redeem those who were under the law.

Because of his great love with which he loved us, he sent his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh,
To redeem those who were under the law.

SECOND READING

From John Paul II’s homily on the 600th anniversary of the sanctuary of Jasna Góra
(AAS 75 [1983] 929-935)
Whatever he says to you, do it

The liturgy expresses this wonderful mystery of the sanctuary of Jasna Góra, first of all by presenting us with the passage from the Gospel of John on the wedding feast at Cana of Galilee.

This text speaks of the presence of the Mother of Jesus, “the Mother of Jesus was there,” and of the invitation given to Jesus himself and his disciples. The incident occurs in fact at the beginning of the teaching of Mary’s Son, at the beginning of his public activity in Galilee.

The Gospel event calls to our minds, above all, the Millennium of Baptism. In fact, by means of that event in the year 966, through the baptism at the beginning of our history, Jesus Christ was invited into our homeland, as though to a Polish Cana. And, once invited, his Mother came immediately. She came and was present together with her Son as numerous testimonies of the first centuries of Christianity in Poland confirm, particularly the hymn “Bogurodzica.”

At Cana of Galilee, Mary says to the servants of the wedding feast: “Whatever he says to you, do it.”

Beginning in 1382, Mary presents herself before the sons and daughters of this land, before entire generations, and repeats the same words. In this way, Jasna Góra becomes a special place of evanglisation. The word of the Good News acquired here an exceptional eloquence, and at the same time here the Mother acts like a mediator of that word. To the history of the Church in our land and to all our Polish Christianity, Jasna Góra gave those maternal figures, the beginnings of which are linked to the event of Cana of Galilee.

Whatever he says to you, do it. And what does Christ tell us? Is it not the thing we encounter in such a firm summary in the Letter of Saint Paul to Galatians?

“God sent his Son, born of a woman, born a subject of the Law, to redeem the subjects of the Law, so that we could receive adoption as sons. As you are sons, God has sent into our hearts the Spirit of his Son crying, ‘Abba, Father’; and so you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir, by God’s own act.”

This is what Christ tells us from generation to generation. He says this through everything he does and teaches. And, above all, he says this through who he is. He is the Son of God and comes to grant us adoption as sons. Obtaining the distinction as sons in the power of the Holy Spirit, in the power of the same Spirit we call God “Father.” As sons of God we cannot be slaves as it brings with it the inheritance of freedom.

Christ, present at the Polish Cana with her Mother, raises the issue of our freedom from generation to generation. Freedom is given to men from God as a measure of their dignity. However, it is simultaneously a task. “Freedom is not a relief but the toil of greatness,” as the poet states. Freedom can be used well or badly. One can build or destroy with it. The calls to be sons of God, to be free, to use freedom well, to built and not to destroy are all contained in the evangelisation of Jasna Góra.

This evangelization of Jasna Góra that calls us to life freely as sons of God has been present here for six centuries. Mary at Cana of Galilee cooperates with her Son. The same happens on Jasna Góra. How many pilgrims have passed through the sanctuary of Jasna Góra during these six centuries… How many of them converted, starting to use their freedom well? How many reclaimed the dignity of adopted sons of God? How many of these stories could be told by the chapel of the Jasna Góra image? How much could be told by the confessionals of the whole basilica? How much could be told by the Stations of the Cross? A huge chapter of human souls’ stories! It might well be the most basic dimension of the anniversary of Jasna Góra. It has stayed alive in people, sons and daughters of this land, when God sends the Spirit of his Son to their hearts so that they may call “Abba, Father!”

We wish to invite Christ, according to today’s Gospel, to the future of our homeland, just as he was invited to Cana of Galilee with his Mother. We speak to Christ through Mary, “Be with us at any time!” We offer this invitation here, on Jasna Góra.

Once again we look upon our sanctuary of Jasna Góra. We listen to the words of the psalm of today’s liturgy, “Walk about Zion, and go all around her. Count her towers; that you may tell it to the generation following. For this is God, our God forever and ever.”

RESPONSORY Psalms 48:1-3; 13-15

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God,
His holy mountain, beautiful in elevation, is the joy of the whole earth.

Walk about Zion, count her towers; that you may tell it to the generation following. For this is God, our God forever and ever.
His holy mountain, beautiful in elevation, is the joy of the whole earth.

TE DEUM You are God: we praise you.

CONCLUDING PRAYER as in Morning Prayer.

MORNING PRAYER

HYMN

Your house, Mary, is built on the mountain
To fill the whole country with light
And be its bright sign of God’s grace
Throughout the history.

Over our land, too oft covered
With clouds of suffering, wars and impotence
Your house, Queen, as a victorious ship
Sails to the relief of the ones calling you.

To your house with prayer and songs
Walk the pilgrims carrying their hearts
To lay them before your Image.
You in turn light faith and persistence in them.

May your eyes, careful and sweet,
Look with love upon the weary,
And show the one you take care for
So that they may praise the Son through his Mother.

Bless, Lady, the dearest land
That praises you on this glorious day;
May Jasna Góra, shining and strong,
Leads the ones who seek God.

May there be eternal glory and praise
To the Father, the Son and the Spirit of Truth;
We pay humble homage to Mary
Whose kingdom is bright with Sun. Amen.
