Optional memorial
In the Diocese of Kalisz – Obligatory memorial

Mary Angela was born in Kalisz on 16 May 1825. Since childhood she would tend to the needs of the Church and neighbours. In 1854 Fr Honoratus Koźmiński, a Capuchin, became her spiritual director. Supported by him, she founded the Congregation of Felician Sisters. After the January Uprising the Congregation moved to Kraków and there began its quick development. In 1869 Mother Mary Angela, due to the loss of hearing, resigned from the position of mother superior and devoted next years to praying and attempting to obtain the official approval of the Congregation. She died on 10 October 1899. She was beatified in 1993 by Pope John Paul II.

(Selected Writings of Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska

Our Happiness Consists in God’s Love

Our happiness consists in God’s love. God’s love in contained in fulfilling God’s will.

Love does not consist in feeling tender useless emotions, devoting oneself in mind as sacrifices that perhaps will never happen. Such love does not cost anything. It even cannot be called love since it does not cost us anything, or since we do not want it to cost us anything. Loving is giving. And what to give? Everything that love demands. Giving quickly, selflessly, with joy; wishing that more should be required of us. To never be satisfied of what we give since we can always give more. Loving means enduring for love all that is unpleasant to our nature: sufferings of mind, heart and body. To suffer in a way that is pleasant to love, valuing more the crosses it sends us than the ones we choose for ourselves, carrying them in a way that is pleasant to love, without relief, consolation from neither men nor God, carrying them for as long as he wishes, even until the last moment of our lives. This is how Jesus loved us. Any kind of love unlike his love is deceptive.

Wanting to love God without suffering is but an empty illusion, and I do not know how one is to say to be suffering if they truly love Jesus Christ our Lord with their hearts. He changes all the bitterness to sweetness and among pains and humiliation he gives comfort and joy.

Let us love Jesus Christ our Lord, let us love him on the cross for this is the comfort of his Heart. In the very same Heart we shall find love, pain and silence. And what difference does the wood of the cross make? It is still a cross that love keeps us nailed to. Let us endeavour to carry our cross humbly and silently for the cross is a great treasure to be hidden in order that it may not be taken away from us. I do not know what would comfort and strengthen us in this long and hard life if it were not for the suffering of love. Let us suffer without complaints, thinking each moment spent beyond the cross is useless. How good it is to live and die on the cross: the cross is an expensive balm. Let us hide it well so that its smell may not be lost before God. How good and redemptive is this cross, any time, any place. Let us give thanks to God if he gives it to us sometimes and beg him to forgive us if we carry it wrong, and having such an expensive treasure we remain in the poverty of our souls.[1]

RESPONSORY 1 John 4:7-9

Let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God.
Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love.

In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him.
Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love.

O God, our Father,
you gave Blessed Mary Angela living faith and boundless love so that she could faithfully fulfil your will,
grant that we, strengthened by her prayers and example, may seek with joy what is pleasant to you and live according to your will.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Congregatio de Cultu Divino et Disciplina Sacramentorum. Probatum seu confirmatum, die 25 ianuarii 1995, Prot. 238/94/L.
