The DEDICATION of the ARCHCATHEDRAL BASILICA in POZNAŃ
Feast
In the Archcathedral Basilica  – Solemnity

The church was erected in Poznań about 966. The first Polish bishop, Jordan, had his seat there. The cathedral was destroyed by fires and rebuilt many a time. In 1821 Pope Pius VII made it metropolitan cathedral. During World War II the cathedral was pulled down. After its restoration, the cathedral was consecrated on the solemnity of Sts Apostles Peter and Paul in 1956. Pope John XXIII gave it the title of minor basilica.

The Christian Faith Spread from Poznań

The Poznań Cathedral of Sts Apostles Peter and Paul is rightly thought of as a decoration of the town thanks to its antiquity, the works of art it houses and the reverence it is surrounded by. The construction of the temple commenced about 966 and it then looked like ancient basilicas. The church was pulled down as the result of the revolutions of the times and in its place the Romanesque church was erected in the middle of the 11th century. Toward the end of the 14th century, due to the increasing number of believers, yet another, more spacious and beautiful Gothic temple was built. Alas, it was also destroyed during World War II. However, it was rebuilt with elaborate care.

The house of God we are talking about is adorned with high, magnificent towers and fourteen chapels surrounding it like a wreath. It does stand out among other Poznań churches with its majesty and size. Hence, it attracts the attention of not only citizens, but also wanderers from afar. What strikes most is its Gothic chancel. Its chapels decorated with marble and works of art fill us with awe. Among these we find the so-called golden chapel, an exquisite result of an Italian artist’s work; therein lie the relics of the distinguished first rulers of Poland. The most beautiful decoration of the Lord’s house is not only the rich interior, sculptures, paintings and ornaments, but also the things that induce the development of the spiritual life and the Divine cult. The Cathedral chapter that is entrusted with the parish cares about the proper and exemplary God’s service as befits the holy faith and the good of believers. The Cathedral houses the relics of Lord’s saints and is lavishly equipped with vessels and vestments.

Soon it will be a thousand years since Prince Mieszko I with his subjects accepted the Catholic faith from Poznań which was then the capital of Poland and from which the faith spread to the surrounding areas. Furthermore, we shall be celebrating the thousandth anniversary of establishing in Poznań the first episcopal see in Poland which was done by our predecessor Pope John XIII. Taking it all into consideration, our reverend brother, Antoni Baraniak, Archbishop of Poznań, asked us to endow the cathedral temple with the title and right of minor basilica. Acceding to this request, after having listened to the opinion of the Congregation of Rites, with the apostolic authority we hereby elevate the Cathedral Church of Sts Apostles Peter and Paul in Poznań to the rank of minor basilica and grant it all the rights and privileges that such temples are entitled to.[1]

RESPONSORY Psalm 84:2-3; 5

How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, God of hosts.
My soul is longing and yearning for the courts of the Lord.

They are happy, who dwell in your house, for ever singing your praise.
My soul is longing and yearning for the courts of the Lord.
