Bl Helen (Helena) Cierpka, name in religion: Maria Guida of the Divine Mercy, was born on 11 April 1900 in Granowiec (the district of Odolanów). On 17 February 1927 she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. After the novitiate in Grodno, she made simple vows. In 1936 she took solemn vows, receiving the mystery of the Divine Mercy. After her profession she left for Nowogródek. In July 1943, along with her sisters, she voluntarily offered a sacrifice to God, giving up her life for 120 inhabitants of Nowogródek, imprisoned by the Nazi occupant invader. She was executed on 1 August 1943 with 10 sisters. She was beatified by John Paul II in Rome on 5 March 2000.

Francis (Franciszek) Stryjas (1882-1944) was born on 26 January in Popów, the Iwanowice parish. Since he was young, he had a special devotion to the Virgin Mary. After the outbreak of the II World War, when German occupation authorities had shut down the churches in Chełmce, Godziesze and Opatówek and sent the priest from Chełmce to the concentration camp in Dachau, he undertook to teach the children of the neighbouring parishes in secret to prepare them for the First Communion. With real devotion, risking his life, he managed to prepare about 300 children in almost 3 years for the First Communion in St Gotthard parish in Kalisz. He got arrested for his activities on 20 July 1944. He was interrogated and tortured. He died on 31 July 1944 in the Gestapo headquarters in Kalisz.

Mary Angela was born in Kalisz on 16 May 1825. Since childhood she would tend to the needs of the Church and neighbours. In 1854 Fr Honoratus Koźmiński, a Capuchin, became her spiritual director. Supported by him, she founded the Congregation of Felician Sisters. After the January Uprising the Congregation moved to Kraków and there began its quick development. In 1869 Mother Mary Angela, due to the loss of hearing, resigned from the position of mother superior and devoted next years to praying and attempting to obtain the official approval of the Congregation. She died on 10 October 1899. She was beatified in 1993 by Pope John Paul II.

Pope John Paul II, upon setting up the Diocese of Kalisz on 25 March 1992, elevated St Nicholas Church to the status of cathedral. It is the oldest church of Kalisz, erected between 1253-1257 by Blessed Yolanda and her husband Boleslaus the Pious. Burnt down in 1560 and 1609, it was re-built in 1612 according to the project of Albin Fontana, Italian architect. Its interior was thoroughly renovated at the beginning the existence of the new diocese and it was equipped with a new post-Counciliar altar, consecrated by Stanisław Napierała, Bishop of Kalisz, on 24 September 1997.
